Safe Cities and Neighborhoods
Safety-promoting urban planning can help create a feeling of safety and reduce crime.
At the Danish Town Planning Institute, we are dedicated to promoting safety in cities and residential areas through safety-oriented urban planning. We recognize that cities and neighborhoods play a vital role in our daily lives, social interactions, and overall feeling of safety and security. Therefore, it is essential that urban planning prioritizes safety alongside other development goals—both when renewing existing areas and designing new ones.
Since 2020, we have been part of the Bo trygt (Live Safely) initiative, a collaboration between TrygFonden, Realdania, Videncentret Bolius, and the Danish Crime Prevention Council. Through this partnership, we work to disseminate principles for safety-enhancing and crime-preventive urban planning to planners and stakeholders across Denmark.
Our publication, Safe Cities and Residential Areas, gathers practical approaches and inspiring examples from Danish municipalities to support planners in integrating safety into their municipal plans, policies, strategies, and development projects. By doing so, we aim to contribute to creating vibrant urban environments where citizens can thrive and feel safe.
