Towards More Sustainable Urban Communities

There is an urgent need to change conventional urban planning practices and rethink our approach to urban development and spatial planning in order to create more sustainable urban communities. This calls for new architectural planning methods and visions that are site-specific and adapted to local conditions, ensuring tangible CO₂ reductions, improved urban quality and well-being, and stronger connections between cities and landscapes.

City and Landscape Laboratories

In Aarhus Municipality, urban and landscape laboratories are being established as a new, exploratory methodological approach to create synergy between knowledge and practice in ongoing and future projects and initiatives. Through the Transition to Sustainable Urban Communities project, 2–4 city laboratories will be set up within local communities to serve as pilot cases for future laboratories.

The project will translate knowledge into tangible micro-experiments through architectural, creative, and aesthetic methods. These may include everything from physical transformations and vision or strategy planning to the development of future scenarios—all aimed at reducing CO₂ emissions. The focus lies on cross-cutting themes that connect systems and foster relationships between natural, physical, and social environments. The goal is to improve urban quality, enhance liveability for diverse life forms, and strengthen cohesion within cities. Ultimately, the project aims to establish a knowledge-based foundation for decision-making that combines site-specific insights with overarching climate goals to achieve significant CO₂ reductions.
