Revitalising town centres for everyday life, community and nature
The project explores how buildings and urban spaces can be reimagined and reused to create vibrancy and community in Danish town centers. The goal is to inspire new strategies through international examples.
Danish town centers are under pressure. Shops are closing, and main streets are becoming deserted - especially in smaller towns. There is a need to rethink how town centers can be used in new ways and create value as settings for everyday life, community, and nature.
The project gathers international examples of how vacant buildings and underutilised public spaces have been transformed through new forms of use. We investigate what drives these changes, what barriers arise, and how local engagement and ownership can be strengthened. Who creates and gains value—and under what conditions?
These international examples are intended to inspire strategies that revitalise Danish town centers and strengthen their role as everyday gathering points. The result will be an inspiration catalogue offering concrete ideas and guiding principles for municipalities and other stakeholders.
